To assess the current state of the art of national diabetes strategies in the EU member states
To assess the variation of diabetes education programs in the European member states
To develop an annotated compendium of diabetes self-management education programs
To perform an analysis of the national diabetes strategies across the 27 EU MS two strategies will be used: internet survey and document review. Use will be made of the Global Diabetes Survey technology and experts involved in the “Active in diabetes prevention” network will be selectively recruited. Parallel to this, a literature search will be performed and experts from international organizations will identify members from health insurance and user organisations. In countries where diabetes self-management educational programs are reported, opinion leaders will validate the information. The author or main user of each diabetes self-management educational program will be interviewed using a standard matrix covering items about program concept, target population, educational performance, applicability and evaluation.
